Events are fast pushing Israel toward a pre-emptive military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, probably by next spring. That strike could well fail. Or it could succeed at the price of oil at $300 a barrel, a Middle East war, and American servicemen caught in between. So why is the Obama administration doing everything it can to speed the war process along?

At July's G-8 summit in Italy, Iran was given a September deadline to start negotiations over its nuclear programs. Last week, Iran gave its answer: No.

Instead, what Tehran offered was a five-page document that was the diplomatic equivalent of a giant kiss-off. It begins by lamenting the "ungodly ways of thinking prevailing in global relations" and proceeds to offer comprehensive talks on a variety of subjects: democracy, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, "respect for the rights of nations," and other areas where Iran is a paragon. Conspicuously absent from the document is any mention of Iran's nuclear program, now at the so-called breakout point, which both Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his boss Ali Khamenei insist is not up for discussion.

What's an American president to do in the face of this nonstarter of a document? What else, but pretend it isn't a nonstarter. Talks begin Oct. 1.

Another great essay from Peter Schiff. This comes as todays headlines proclaimed that economists are 'unanimous' that helicopter Ben should be reappointed as Fed chairman. Well, here is at least one economist that disagrees.

There is an inexplicable, but somehow widely held, belief that stock market movements are predictive of economic conditions. As such, the current rally in U.S. stock prices has caused many people to conclude that the recession is nearing an end. The widespread optimism is not confined to Wall Street, as even Barack Obama has pointed to the bubbly markets to vindicate his economic policies. However, reality is clearly at odds with these optimistic assumptions.

In the first place, stock markets have been taken by surprise throughout history. In the current cycle, neither the market nor its cheerleaders saw this recession coming, so why should anyone believe that these fonts of wisdom have suddenly become clairvoyant?

According to official government statistics, the current recession began in December of 2007. Two months earlier, in October of that year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 both hit all-time record highs. Exactly what foresight did this run-up provide? Obviously markets were completely blind-sided by the biggest recession since the Great Depression. In fact, the main reason why the markets sold off so violently in 2008, after the severity of the recession became impossible to ignore, was that it had so completely misread the economy in the preceding years.

Now think about this comparison to the CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER posed by guns, a cause our friends on the left are so genuinely concerned about.

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188. (Statistics courtesy of FBI )

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners. Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do!'

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention!

Apart from the obvious financial distress that the current economic crisis has inflicted on most Americans, perhaps one of the more irksome byproducts of the meltdown has been the inescapability of clueless economic blather. It's bad enough when so-called economists serve up the same Keynesian nonsense that has led us down the current cul-de-sac in the first place. At least those people have some incidental knowledge, however deeply flawed, of basic economic concepts. It's far worse when political pundits, whose understanding of economics typically comes from Treasury Department talking points, hold forth as if they really know what is going on....

Thinking the Unthinkable...

This is a fascinating article by Clay Shirkey, a very articulate voice speaking about the impact of emerging communication technology on culture. In this article, he takes on the current outcry to 'save' print media (read: the New York Times)

However, if you take this article and compare his key points with the church (little 'c'), the parallels are compelling. Following is what I thought to be the most salient point as one might apply his arguement to the parallel paradigm shifts in evangelical christianity...

"When we shift our attention from ’save newspapers’ (save the church?) to ’save society’ (expand the kingdom?), the imperative changes from ‘preserve the current institutions’ to ‘do whatever works.’ And what works today isn’t the same as what used to work.

Also very salient was his observation that the ultimate 'prevailing models' in this upheaval will not be known until a good deal of time goes by. The new forms of the 'c'hurch might be out there now, they might not, but it is pretty certain that if they are, no one has noticed them yet.

Talking with a pastor friend this afternoon, it occurred to me that my own denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, finds itself in the perfect storm.

Oneida, Ky. - We are on the verge – within 10 years – of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity. This breakdown will follow the deterioration of the mainline Protestant world and it will fundamentally alter the religious and cultural environment in the West.

Within two generations, evangelicalism will be a house deserted of half its occupants. (Between 25 and 35 percent of Americans today are Evangelicals.) In the "Protestant" 20th century, Evangelicals flourished. But they will soon be living in a very secular and religiously antagonistic 21st century.

This collapse will herald the arrival of an anti-Christian chapter of the post-Christian West. Intolerance of Christianity will rise to levels many of us have not believed possible in our lifetimes, and public policy will become hostile toward evangelical Christianity, seeing it as the opponent of the common good.

Millions of Evangelicals will quit. Thousands of ministries will end. Christian media will be reduced, if not eliminated. Many Christian schools will go into rapid decline. I'm convinced the grace and mission of God will reach to the ends of the earth. But the end of evangelicalism as we know it is close.

Peter Schiff was right... EXCELLENT clip

It is stunning to realize just HOW WRONG all the main stream forecasters were, including Ben Stein. I wonder how these guys still can go on the air after mocking Peter so directly, and then it turns out that they were horrifically wrong, and he was completely right. For example...

- In December 2006 (first interview in clip), when Peter points out the presence of lax lending standards being a huge problem, the other frequent commentator exclaims “what are you talking about? What lax lending standards”… uhh… he might want to check up on something called Fannie and Freddie…

- On August 18th, 2007, Ben Stein says that the financials stocks are with out question the best buying opportunity of his lifetime- that they were so cheap and yet so valuable that they were being given away. When Peter spoke against this, he was again literally mocked off the set. One stock that Ben pointed to that day was Merrill Lynch. Then, it was trading at $76- this was the killer lowball deal Ben was gushing about. TODAY- Merrill closed down just under elevn bucks. Great call Ben.

- In the same interview, another Fox commentator is drooling over Goldman Sachs, who at the then $175 dollar a share price was an insanely good buy. More like goodbye. Today their stock closed at $73 (after a low of $52 late last year).

- In December of 2007, the regular Fox commentator promises us that Peter is all wet, and that the DOW will go to 16,000 in 2008. Well, he was only over 50% wrong. Today we closed at close to 6500! OOPS!

In his first post-inauguration interview, with an Arabic language television channel, President Obama said he wanted to “initiate a new partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest” between America and the Muslim world.

On the On Faith website run by the Washington Post and Newsweek, I applauded the President’s comments. What I wanted to add, but didn’t, was the fact that the Christian West has been treating Islam with great respect and sensitivity for decades.

Americans, for example, have gone to war to free Muslim nations like Bosnia, whose people were being persecuted by tyrants. And in Western democracies, Muslim citizens do not face persecution.

By contrast, in many Muslim nations like Egypt, Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, Christians often endure life-threatening persecution and mob violence.

And what has Obama gotten for his outreach to Muslims? The answer can be found in a fascinating New York Times article entitled “Why the Muslim World Can’t Hear Obama.”

The author, an Egyptian named Aswany, wrote that Egyptians were wildly supportive of Obama’s victory, seeing him as a symbol of justice.

But then came his first test: Gaza. Egyptians expected Obama to “take a stand against Israel’s war on Gaza,” Aswany wrote. But because he did not, Aswany said, Egyptians began to tune him out. And unless America condemns Israel, Egyptians will continue to tune him out.

If Obama, with his Muslim family ties and openness, cannot get a respectful hearing by Middle Eastern Muslims, we have to ask ourselves: What do they really want?

The answer, of course, is plain—the destruction of Israel.

Why should the United States support Israel, anyway? This question is already being asked in the mainstream media, Internet chat rooms, and in private conversations. Ominously, most European nations, given a choice, would choose the Islamic world over Israel in a heartbeat. The reason boils down to oil. Oil speaks louder than commitment to a free state.

But what about America? Is it really so hard to image a scenario in which, as the economy worsens and Islam’s threat grows, America will face a dreadful choice: Do we abandon Israel to appease the Muslim world?

When we hear arguments like this, we must recall the words of Genesis 12, verses 1 and 2, regarding the ancient Israelites. God says, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.”

Of course, we must not confuse the modern nation-state of Israel with the people of the Old Covenant. But it’s clear in Romans 10 and 11 that Paul understands God’s special concern for the Jews. Certainly America’s own sense of decency demands that we help protect Israel—the Jewish homeland and the only true democracy in the Middle East.

But how strong will America’s sense of decency remain when it is put under pressure? How strong, when the Muslim world puts it so simply—peace or Israel?

That’s what they’re saying, and we can’t smooth talk that away. The future of Israel may depend on American Christians, whom I hope and pray will speak out on behalf of Israel and be prepared to defend the right of the Jewish people to their homeland.

CAN CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY ENJOY LIFE?

We must take what God has given us. God gave the Promised Land to Israel, but the former slaves simply did not have the faith to take it. Some of them even schemed to return to Egypt and a life of enslavement when they met with the challenges of a life of freedom. They had enough faith to leave Egypt but not enough to enter the new home promised by their Lord. God allowed that faithless generation to live forty years in the wilderness, wandering around somewhere between their former slavery and the true enjoyment of their God-given freedom.

When Joshua was finally able to lead a new generation across Jordan to the land that had been waiting for them, God instructed him concerning what to tell the people. In Joshua 1:15 this faithful leader announced to the people…”you shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it…” Joshua’s words “and enjoy it” have recently been ringing in my ears. I meet so very few Christians whose lives are characterized by the enjoyment of life in general. They seem only to enjoy church or religious activities with other believers. Occasionally I meet some honest soul who will tell me straight up that church bores him. I can relate to someone like that. Church has bored me for decades, but Jesus continues to fascinate me. I never cease to enjoy him. I even enjoy him in church when he’s given center stage.

I often wonder if some folks know how to enjoy anything. Some believers become preacher “groupies,” almost never having anything to talk about but the latest goings on in the church culture and overly enamored with some particular religious leader or movement. It’s as if they feel they’d be sinning to own up to enjoyment of everyday, temporal things.

Thank God, I often get to associate with people who display little or no religious leanings. If I can establish a relationship with them before they learn that I’m a preacher, I actually get to participate in their enjoyment of life without every conversation being baptized in pious “God talk” or phony-sounding references to things “spiritual” or “churchy.” I love to hear builders talk about building—fishermen spinning yarns about the one that got away—just plain folks describing the fun they had at the beach or on the cruise, etc.

Jesus spent about thirty years as a carpenter and only the last three in public ministry. (Wouldn’t you like to have a chair that Jesus made?) Paul was a tent maker who would occasionally return to his trade as the need arose. I think Peter never lost his interest in the fishing business—even after he had become a “fisher of men.” I can easily envision him chatting about the day’s catch with the men still involved in the profession.

It’s enchanting to me that Jesus—after he was resurrected—met the disciples on the shore of the lake where they had been fishing and cooked breakfast for them. Having enjoyed many meals with them before his crucifixion, he was communicating that they could expect a continued, even enhanced, enjoyment of the common things of life on this side of the cross. Fishing and breakfast on the beach. That must have been a fascinating meal—“enjoyable” would be mammoth understatement.

Pray for those whose religion has stolen their joy. Pray for those sincere saints whose understanding of the Christian life is one of constant angst and drudgery, contaminated by the fear of having too much fun lest they fall into sin. Pray for those whose religion, though pure as it is, has made them one dimensional and has removed them from the personal enjoyment of the promises of God that they have so diligently sought. Pray that we may all “…return unto the land of our possession---and ENJOY IT!”—for God’s sake-- and for ours.

La Roca is a relatively 'under the radar' but profoundly powerful ministry that is bringing the transforming message of New Life in Christ to the heroin street culture of Tijuana. The moving panoramic in the first half of the vid is "The Ranch", a facility we have been building one structure at a time, along with other mission teams and the recovering men themselves. It is the 'promised land' of the La Roca ministry- the place the men come to live for around a year to get clean, develop life skills, but most importantly- be raised and trained as dynamic disciples of Christ.
